We interrupt your regular scheduled blogging

In less than 1 hour, the opening ceremonies for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver will start and I am extremely excited. You see, I am an Olympic Junkie. What I do need to clarify, is that I am not a Junkie for 'Olympics' or Olympic garb, I am an Olympic sports junkie. I won't pretend that I watch every single sport there is, because I don't. I don't like them all, I do however monitor Canadian medal counts in every single sport, and on any given day I can tell you where the Canadian medal count is,where we rank, and what sports we have won medals. I print out the full hockey schedules ( Mens & Womens) along with Speed Skating and mark down medal events. And yes I do follow the Paralympic medal count too.
My whole family knows this about me, and it is a bit of a running joke- but I'm alright with this, I know I'm a geek.
So for those of you still reading this blather, I would like to explain why I am this way. I find for the most part, as a country, Canadians are not really a rather patriotic bunch. Certain events tend to bring out our patriotism  July 1st and  massive sporting events offer us the opportunity to wave our flag and be proud...and drink...did I forget to mention that part?  The Olympics bring out my inner "I'm proud to be Canadian".  I'm proud dammit!
When the Olympics roll around, we become "Team Canada" where it doesn't matter which team Sidney Crosby or Jerome Ignila play for during their real jobs they ,( like us) unite under one flag to compete against other Countries, and kick some ass, and dammit, if it isn't our time to dig deep, give 110% and show the world that we can compete and hold our own..WTF...sorry * kicks soap box*
ehum..
Since BC put the bid in to host the Olympics there has been controversy abound. It has cost BC taxpayers tons of money. Capital spending projects have been reduced, and  monies re-routed to Olympic venue construction and maintenance. Vancouver's homeless population have been or will be house/relocated. There will be protests, and Governmental bickering (oh yeah..nope cause our Government is currently on holidays.) Foreign eyes will be watching Canada and rightfully so. There are many hot button topics surrounding the Olympics and I will continue to pay attention, however, once the games begin, you will find the majority of my attention will be focused on our Canadian Atheles who are notoriously under funded and have trained for over 4 years for this day.

I will be rooting Canadian athletes on from the warmth and safety of my livering  room. I will get all teary when our national anthem is played for the first time, and hell any other time too. I will be watching, and hoping, and yelling and cheering. I will be watching perfectly sculpted bodies in skin tight suits speedskate their way to victory. Cub, X  and I will watch Snowboarding, Arials and every single Hockey game that the Canadian teams play.
And rest assured I will cry with pride when a Canadian wins a Gold medal for the first time ever on Canadian soil.
However, I will not, and refuse to Chant "Eh, Oh Canada Go".
Let the Games Begin!

Hubs and I watched the opening ceremonies last night and a discussion regarding Canadian Patriotism (or the lack thereof) began. It was right after the poet (who's name I do not remember - isn't that aweful?) recited that highly stirring tribute to Canada and those of us who inhabit it. I cried.
I made a similar comment (to yours)about how we as a country do not seem overly patriotic on the whole and he disagreed - I KNOW, WHAT was he thinking? But he made a really good point: he said, "I dunno, hun - I think we are just a little less "showy" than other countries. I'm bloody proud to be a Canadian, thankful my children live in this great country ... but you'd maybe not see me stuffing that down anybody's throat ... I celebrate my pride quietly". Ya know - I feel very much the same way. I think our goverment is fucked up - but I really don't think that is just a Canadia thing ... but then ... something big and showy comes along (like the spectacle I witnessed last night) and my heart grows two sizes too big ... and yet, the exhibitionist in me simply posted a link on FB, shed a few quiet tears last night and made a comment on your blog.

Is that really such a bad thing? I think as a country, we have a whole lot to shout from the roof tops ... doesn't make it any less true if we choose not to.

"We are the 'True North' - Strong and Free" *shivers*

I embrace your inner geek. I find your love for this to be simply another endearing quality that you posess.

I'm with Dani's hub on this one...Canadians are deeply patriotic, but in line with our slightly reserved nature (unless we've had a few) we don't go out of way to make a big display.I tear up and get shivers whenever I see an arena full of hockey fans belting out 'Oh, Canada'.

Soooooo, where's the Medal Count update? I haven't checked a blog (including my own) in over a month but I think, whats the fastest way to get a Canadian Medal count? I know! And?? nada! How hard is it to post a single line Medal count? Sheesh! You're such a slacker!! Shhhhh, no one cares that I haven't posted a damn think in months, I just want a medal count!
